Wintin dirt bike track suitable for all ages and abilities

Winton Motor Raceway is undergoing something of a revival since the Ronke family resigned from any involvement with the raceway and Benalla Auto Club a little more than 12 months ago.

Most recently the club secured the V8 Supercars at the venue for the next three years.

It’s also announced the return of the Superbikes with the Grande Finale of the Australian Superbikes Championship at Winton at the end of this month (September 30 to October2).

What hasn’t made the headlines is the resurgence of the Motocross Club at Winton.

In fact most people don’t even know it’s there.

In the northern corner of the raceway’s land with plenty of room for expansion, the dirt bike track was getting very little use.

That was until a new club was formed and committee elected earlier this year.

Winton MX Club president Wayne Vearing believes the track was been at Winton for the past decade or so and hopes it will become a competition venue in the near future.

‘‘It is a licensed track through Motorcycle Victoria. We had our track inspection and affiliation earlier on this year,’’ Mr Vearing said.

‘‘At the moment our committee is only new and we’re just trying to get the start of things and learn how to run competitions properly before we do jump into racing, but yeah, into the future we’d like to hold race events.

‘‘It’s not the largest track around but it’s a nice track for every ability of rider, so if you don’t want to do the big jumps you can just ride over them, so it accommodates the younger kids and even the A-Graders that ride the nationals, some of them come out here to ride occasionally and they seem to find it a really good tight little track.’’

So does Mr Vearing think there is a need for two tracks in the shire?

‘‘I don’t know whether I’d say there’s a ‘need’... it would be good for Benalla and the shire to bring quality riders into the area and probably spend their money in Benalla and ride in this track at Chesney Vale,’’ he said.

‘‘I believe it will be open a lot more than we will be because we are a volunteer club, so we’re limited on what time we spend.

‘‘I can’t see it being a big issue. I don’t mind having the other track.

‘‘Riders don’t just ride at one track. They use all different tracks to get their skills up.

‘‘Years ago the committee did a lot of work here to get the track up and running and we just up-keep (sic) it now.

‘‘The job that they’ve done to get it started was fantastic and now the new committee has taken it over and (is) getting it going again.’’
