Writers to aim for the sky

September 27, 2016

The sky is the limit: Harry, Lily and Ruby with Cr Barbara Alexander AO at St Joseph’s Primary School let their ideas take flight for the Benalla Festival Writing Competition.

Budding writers in Benalla Rural City are being invited to enter a story or a poem on the topic ‘‘The Sky is the Limit... celebrating aviation in Benalla’’ ahead of the Benalla Festival.

The theme anticipates the upcoming 34th FAI 2017 World Gliding Championships, but also celebrates the many people who strive high to create a better community.

There are $1500 worth of cash prizes on offer, with categories for primary school, secondary school and open entrants.

Entries close on Friday, October 21, and winners will be announced during the Benalla Festival on Thursday, November 3, at the Sir Edward ‘‘Weary’’ Dunlop Learning Centre.

Benalla Festival Committee chair, councillor Barbara Alexander AO, said that the sky really was the limit for the range of possible topics for entries.

‘‘People might be inspired by a bird’s-eye view of our beautiful landscape, gliding or other aviation activity, or a time when someone exceeded expectations or inspired them to reach higher,’’ Cr Alexander said.

‘‘We are always extremely impressed with the quality of entries from people of all ages to this popular competition and I am looking forward to reading some about some soaring ideas and adventures.

‘‘The Benalla Festival Advisory Committee is very grateful to the Friends of the Benalla Library and the National Bank of Australia for sponsoring this activity that sets the scene for one of our premier community events.’’

The Benalla Festival 2016 runs from 29 October to 6 November.

●Entry forms are available at, the Customer Service Centre at 1 Bridge St East, Benalla, the Sir Edward ‘‘Weary’’ Dunlop Learning Centre, Fawckner Dr, National Australia Bank, Nunn St and school offices.
