A family in Benalla has been left devastated after a fire tore through its weatherboard home in Thomas St during the weekend.
CFA spokesperson Craig Ludeman said the single-story home was well alight by the time fire units attended.
‘‘We were called at 8.20am on Saturday morning and we had three units attend the scene,’’ he said.
‘‘The occupants — who were home at the time — were all safely evacuated from the residence.’’
Police said the fire was believed to have started in one of the bedrooms and said the occupants became aware of it by smoke alarms.
Benalla CFA firefighter Charlie Sexton said units did well to contain the fire to the room of origin.
‘‘We had a very fast response, but unfortunately it did spread into the roof space and cause some further damage,’’ he said.
An arson chemist from Melbourne has been called to determine the cause of the fire.
