The Andrews Labor Government’s upgrades of the dangerous level crossings on Racecourse Rd in Chiltern, Caroll Rd in Benalla, Palmerston St in Baddaginnie, Rutherglen-Springhurst Rd, Springhurst, Nagambie-Locksley Rd, Locksley, and Maher’s Rd in Violet Town are complete.

Labor Upper House Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes, announced the completion of the works last week, which have installed bells lights and boom-gates to make them even safer for the regular passenger and freight services along the north-east line.

A further 18 road crossings on the line between Seymour and Wodonga will be completed by the end of next year.

The $50 million program will upgrade 52 high-risk road crossings across the regional train network.

It will also install automatic emergency exit gates at 25 dangerous pedestrian crossings.

The program will be fast-tracked, so the most dangerous crossings are upgraded by the end of next year.

The program was due to be completed by mid-2019.

It is part of the Labor Government’s unprecedented level crossing safety campaign, which includes crossing removals and upgrades, and increased fines for illegally crossing the tracks.

‘‘These are the most high-risk crossings on the north-east line, and we’re going to make them safer, sooner,’’ Ms Symes said.

‘‘We’re not wasting a moment upgrading dangerous crossings that put passengers and drivers at risk.

‘‘The Safer Country Crossing Program will upgrade more than 50 road level crossings and 25 pedestrian crossings on the regional rail network — making local communities across country Victoria safer.’’
