Oktoberfest comes to Benalla this Saturday with a crowd of lederhosen-clad beer enthusiasts headed to the Shed on Bridge St to celebrate the traditional German festival.

The concept consists of dressing up, ladies in their dirndl dresses and men in their lederhosen, while consuming beer and cider.

Organisers say despite the event offering the expected sea of beer served in traditional steins, it is for all ages and they aim to offer something for everyone.

Event manager Olivia Cooney said it was great Oktoberfest was coming to Benalla.

‘‘Oktoberfest is coming to us for a change, so I wouldn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get involved,’’ Ms Cooney said.

‘‘If there’s sun, beer and food, I’m there.’’

Attendees will enjoy numerous carnival-style attractions, including jumping castles, side stalls, interactive games, a tug-of-war, steinhoisting and freshly made wood-fired pizza.

The event is hosted by popular local musician Wally Howlett and will include two bars, a coffee van and food stalls, one of which is organised by Benalla’s own Rustik Cafe.

A variety of local businesses and clubs, including the Benalla Saints and CFA, will take part in a tug-of-war.

There are lots of prizes to be won:

●The winning tug-of-war team will receive a free round of German beer and an award to display at their club.

●The best dressed man and woman will receive a $50 Lionheart voucher.

●The beardmeister men’s winner will receive a complimentary grooming kit.

●The steinhoisting winner will receive a personalised ‘‘The Shed’’ stein.
